Fire knocks out village's power
WebPosted Sep 3 2002 07:01 AM EDT

Rencontre East  —  The isolated Fortune Bay community of Rencontre East is without electricity after a fire destroyed the town's generator building.

Deputy mayor Gary Wells says the fire appears to have started in a motor Monday evening.

The volunteer fire department sprayed salt water on the metal building to keep the fire from spreading.

He says the outage is inconvenient, but it hasn't caused major trouble.

Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro has started the process of restoring power, but it could take up to 48 hours.

The utility has to truck mobile generators to Pool's Cove, where a ferry will bring them to Rencontre East.
